The Planning of Eastern Guangdong Intercity Railway Network with Shantou as an Important Node is Approved

Recently, China National Development and Reform Commission officially approved the Planning of Eastern Guangdong Intercity Railway Network in the Urban Agglomerations on the West Side of the Straits submitted by Guangdong Province. According to the Planning, Shantou will be an important node in the Network. The objective of this Planning is: Form an intercity railway network which takes Shantou, Chaozhou, Jieyang and Shanwei as main nodes and covers major towns in eastern Guangdong; realize "Half an Hour Commuting Circle" of the central cities in Shantou, Jieyang and Chaozhou as well as "One Hour Traffic Circle" in eastern Guangdong; and provide fast transit intercity passenger transportation services for eastern Guangdong.

Among others, the project in the short-term development plan consists of “one line, one ring, and one radiating line”, namely, the intercity railways of Shanwei – Shantou - Raoping, Shantou - Eastern Chaozhou – Chaoshan - Chaoshan Airport – Shantou, and Chaoshan Airport – Southern Jieyang, with a total length of 320 kilometers and a total investment of RMB 69.2 billion. The project in the long-term development plan consists of the intercity railway network with the framework of“one line, two rings, and two radiating lines", with a total length of 460 kilometers, in which “one line” refers to Shanwei – Shantou – Raoping intercity railway, “two rings” refer to the intercity railways of Shantou - Eastern Chaozhou - Chaoshan - Chaoshan Airport – Shantou, and Shantou- Chaoshan Airport – Southern Jieyang - Puning – Shantou, and “two radiating lines” refer to the intercity railways of Chaoshan Airport – Southern Jieyang – Northern Jieyang, and Puning – Huilai.
