Shantou has introduced the strategic partner —— China Merchants Port Holdings Company Limited, and implemented the relevant supporting policies. Last year, the container throughput at Shantou Port increased rapidly. The container throughput at Shantou Port totaled at 1.299 million twenty foot-equivalent units (TEUs), an increase of 4.8％ over the previous year. Among others, the container throughput at Guang’ao Port Area reached 176,900 TEUs, an increase of 51.5％ over the previous year. After its rebounding in 2016, the container throughput at Shantou Port continued to maintain a fast growth and present a good trend.

Shantou Port has been listed as one of the 15 key ports in the development of the Belt and Road Initiative. Last year, China Merchants Port Holdings Company Limited signed the capital increase and share expansion agreement with Shantou City and officially started its operation, which marked that the world’s top port operator was optimistic about the prospects of Shantou Port and invested in Shantou Port. The strategic cooperation on Shantou Port made a breakthrough. After it invested in Shantou Port, relying on its strong strength, rich experience and global strategic resources, China Merchants Port Holdings Company Limited has standardized the port management procedure, increased its investment in the terminal service facilities, actively promoted international liner ship companies to add new routes, and accelerated the rapid growth of the container throughput.

　　我市引入招商局港口战略合作伙伴，落实相关扶持政策，去年集装箱吞吐量实现较快增长。全港集装箱吞吐量完成129.9万标箱、同比增长4.8％。其中，广澳港区集装箱吞吐量完成17.69万标箱，同比增长51.5％。这是继2016年全港集装箱吞吐量止跌回升后，继续保持较快增长并呈现向好态势。
　　汕头港被列为国家“一带一路”重点建设的15个港口之一。去年，招商局港口与我市签订增资扩股协议，并正式挂牌运作，标志着世界顶级码头运营商看好汕头港、入驻汕头港，我市港口战略合作取得突破性进展。招商局港口入驻后，凭借其雄厚实力、丰富经验以及全球战略资源，规范港口管理流程，加大码头服务设施投入，积极推动国际班轮公司新增航线，促进集装箱吞吐量较快增长。
