Recently, the State Council announced the eighth batch of national major cultural relic protection sites as well as the projects incorporated into existing national major cultural relic protection sites. Among them, there are three selected sites in Shantou, namely, the Patriarch Dadian Pagoda in Chaoyang, the former sites of Chao Customs in Jinping and Haojiang, and the former site of Jinping Central Authorities' Red Traffic Line.
Built in 1898 to 1922, the former site of Chao Customs (located in Jinping district and Haojiang District, Shantou City) contains five immovable cultural relics, including the bell tower of the customs, the dormitory of senior assistants, the dormitory of junior Chinese assistants, the Waima Road deputy custom officer residence, and the Queshi deputy customs commissioner mansion. They are the few well preserved modern western buildings in the Chaoshan area, and are also the only representative buildings in the large-scale Chao Customs building complex in history. They are listed as the "important modern historical site and representative building" project in the eighth batch of national major cultural relics protection sites.
Built in the Tang Dynasty, the Patriarch Dadian Pagoda (located in Chaoyang District, Shantou City) is the oldest and most complete tomb pagoda preserved in the Chaoshan area, and is also the bell shaped pagoda of Tang Dynasty rarely seen in the country now. It is listed as the "historic building" project in the eighth batch of national major cultural relics protection sites.
Built from 1930 to 1934, the Central Authorities' Red Traffic Line (located in Jinping District, Shantou City, etc.) was one of the secret traffic lines opened by the Transportation Bureau of the CPC Central Committee during the period of "counter encirclement and suppression". Its former site is listed as the "important modern historical site and representative building" project in the eighth batch of national major cultural relics protection sites.
