Swim City in China
On April 26, 2005, Shantou City was named one of the 7th batch of the 14 "Swim Cities" in China.
As a coastal city near the South China Sea, Shantou is always a good place for swimmers to beat the waves. Shantou has a swimming and diving stadium that is considered to be the "currently best stadium in China and a first-class one in the world" by the swimming community. It also has a training base for Chinese diving team and many swimming facilities. Shantou has also cultivated many excellent swimmers. It has been holding the widely-participated sea-crossing swimming contest every year since 2001, which has boosted the swimming activities in the city.
According to statistics, Shantou currently has thirty-three swimming facilities and five 50-meter standard swimming pools (stadiums) registered at the sports department. There are 10 swimming places around the Shantou Bay, which can serve near 100,000 swimmers at the same time everyday.

全国游泳之乡
2005年4月26日,汕头市被国家体育总局命名为第七批全国“游泳之乡”,全国仅有14个城市获此殊荣。
南海之滨的汕头,向来是游泳健儿击水搏浪的好地方。拥有被游泳界称为“目前国内最好、世界一流”的游泳跳水馆、中国跳水队汕头训练基地和众多的游泳场所。汕头还培养了很多游泳好手。从2001年以来每年举办一次的声势浩大的群众性渡海活动,更使汕头的游泳运动蓬勃发展。
据统计,目前全市已在体育部门登记注册的游泳场所33家,50米标准的游泳池(馆)5个。现在,环汕头海湾的游泳场共10个,每天可同时容纳近10万人游泳。
