On February 17, 2000, the Ministry of Environmental Protection awarded Shantou City the title of "National Environmental Protection Model City". On April 11, the Ministry of Environmental Protection granted Shantou City the plaque of "National Environmental Protection Model City" in an awarding ceremony.
