On March 10, a three-axis mixer set upright a nearly 40-meter drilling rod and started to drill slowly, marking the official start of construction of shield launching shafts of the Shantou-Shanwei Railway Subsea Tunnel and the project construction process started to accelerate as a whole.
The Sixth Bid Section of Shantou-Shanwei Railway, built by the China Railway 14th Bureau Group Co., Ltd., is located in Shantou City with a total length of 23.286 kilometers. Due to complex engineering geological environment, proportion of bridges and tunnels of 92.34%, and numbers of special bridge spans, the construction is difficult. Greater Shantou Bay Area Subsea Tunnel, a part of the construction, is approximately 9.8 kilometers in length, enjoying the reputation of the first domestic high-speed railway subsea tunnel with a design standard of 350 kilometers per hour, allowing the vehicles to pass through on two lanes in a single tunnel. Under complex deep-water conditions, the construction needs to cross multiple geological faults. Shield tunneling, mining and the like are adopted to build such a railway with great construction difficulty and high risk.
