In recent years, Shantou’s paper-cut artists have been actively pursuing innovation on the basis of inheriting traditional techniques. From paper-cut themes to “trans-boundary” cultural creativity, some influential events have emerged. For example, nearly 100 people participated in the creation of paper-cut long scrolls; a father and his daughter worked together to create the public art installation of the landmark of Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport. These events manifest the spirit of paper-cut artists who keep abreast of the changing times and forge ahead with innovation.
"Harmonious and Happy Overseas Chinese Hometown - Shantou Images as Showed in 100-Meter Paper-cut Scroll" is China’s first paper-cut long scroll showing the images of the hometown of overseas Chinese from multiple perspectives, and it is the longest paper-cut work in Guangdong Province so far. The work has a total length of 100 meters and a width of 40 centimeters. It covers the main landscapes, humanities, and folklore in the six districts and one county of Shantou, showcasing the profile of the overseas Chinese hometown. The work took more than two years to complete. Nearly 100 people participated in the creation, who included more than 30 main creators, including several paper-cut inheritors of intangible cultural heritage at the provincial, municipal, and district levels, as well as master craftsmen.
The visual landmark “SWA” sculpture of Chaoshan International Airport was co-designed by Chen Chuansheng, a master of arts and crafts in Guangdong Province and a municipal representative inheritor of the provincial intangible heritage project-Shantou paper-cut, and his daughter Chen Sijia. The surface of the sculpture uses the paper-cut pattern, showing 14 items of Chaoshan folklore and art, including Teochew opera, dragon boat race, dragon and lion dance, and double biting goose dance. In addition, there are many public art installations incorporating Teochew elements at the Airport, so that the visitors from home and abroad can feel the rich Chaoshan customs as soon as they get off the plane.
