
On the morning of May 18, the starting ceremony of documentary feature titled The Other Side of the Sea————Teochew Letters, sponsored by the municipal government, undertaken by Teochew History and Culture Research Center and produced by CCTV Newsreel and Documentary Film Group, was held in Shantou Teochew Letters Museum.
Letters written by overseas Chinese (Qiaopi) represent a carrier of exchange in funds and affection among overseas Chinese and their domestic relatives. In 2013, the Qiaopi Archives was listed by the Memory of the World. The documentary film titled The Other Side of the Sea————Teochew Letters is divided into two episodes with each one lasting for 30 minutes. The planned shooting period is about 10 months. It will not only be shot in Chaozhou and Shantou, but also in areas of Southeast Asia such as Thailand and Malaysia. This film aims to describe the historical tracks of Teochew people who went abroad to make their living and then send letters back to their hometown at the late stage of the Qing Dynasty and the period of Republic of China through one after another story, reflecting Teochew people’s spirits and virtues in entrepreneurship, social integrity and patriotism.

纪录片《海那边——潮汕侨批》开机
5月18日上午,由市政府主办、潮汕历史文化研究中心承办、中央电视台中央新影集团制作的专题纪录片《海那边——潮汕侨批》开机仪式在汕头侨批文物馆举行。
侨批是海外华侨和国内亲人间经济和感情交流的载体,2013年,侨批档案入选“世界记忆遗产名录”。纪录片《海那边——潮汕侨批》分为上下两集,每集30分钟,计划拍摄周期约10个月,取景地不仅选择在潮汕地区,还将前往泰国、马来西亚等东南亚地区拍摄。该片旨在通过一个个侨批故事,描述清末、民国时期,潮汕人出洋谋生、寄批回乡的历史轨迹,反映潮汕人民艰苦创业、笃诚守信、爱国爱乡的精神和美德。
