On the morning of May 27, 2008, Shantou City was named one of the "Top 50 Informationization Cities in China 2008" at the closing ceremony of the 7th Forum on City Information in the Asia Pacific Region and the press conference of the 1st AMD Cup "Top 50 Informationization Cities in China" held in Shanghai International Convention Center.

The 7th Forum on City Information in the Asia Pacific Region was jointly held by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations Human Settlements Program, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the Ministry of Commerce of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shanghai Municipal Government. The theme of the Forum was "Smart Use of ICT for Better Cities". It involved a series of activities such as the opening ceremony, meetings, symposiums, awarding ceremony and exhibition. Sha Zukang, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, and more than 300 experts and entrepreneurs from nearly 100 cities and over 30 international organizations in Asia, Europe, Australia, America and Africa participated in this Forum.

　　2008年5月27日上午，在上海国际会议中心闭幕的亚太地区城市信息化论坛第七届年会暨首届AMD杯“2008中国城市信息化50强”发布会上，我市荣获“2008中国城市信息化50强”称号。
　　此次会议是由联合国经济与社会事务部、联合国开发计划署、联合国工业发展组织、国际电信联盟、联合国人居署、联合国训练研究所、中国工业和信息化部、中国科学技术部、中国商务部、中国科学院、上海市人民政府等单位联合主办的亚太地区城市信息化论坛第七届年会。本届论坛年会主题是“信息化，让城市更美好”。 论坛由开幕式、大会、专题会、颁奖仪式、展示等精彩活动组成。联合国副秘书长沙祖康以及来自亚洲、欧洲、澳洲、美洲和非洲等，近百个城市、三十多个国际组织、著名专家和企业家等300多名代表参加了本届论坛。
